A stairway can be beautiful, graceful, and elegant, but not all stairs are created equally. There are hundreds of thousands of staircases worldwide that are scary for many different reasons. Some have caused death, many are falling apart, and others lead to eerie experiences from the depth of Paris to the peaks in Yosemite to the top of the temples.
Taking you from point A to point B, these spectacular staircases offer some of the world’s most breathtaking views and heart-stopping thrills. The stairs are more terrifying that they look like nothing but the passages leading to some devil's home in hell, whether they're towering over natural wonders or winding inside the city landmarks. These steps are not for faint-hearted people.
Dangerous Staircases around the World:
Check out the terrifying stairs in the world.
Mount Hua Shan:
The climb to the summit of Mount Hua Shan will test even those with a head for extreme heights and no regard for their safety. It’s not just the numerous steps hewn into the rock that climbers have to contend with, but these steps are hammered into narrow and exposed boardwalks. But don't worry, there's a tea house at the summit to soothe your frayed nerves.
Half Dome Cable Route California is an icon of Yosemite National Park:
Half Dome is challenging to even the experienced hiker, rising nearly 5000 feet above Yosemite Valley and 8800 feet above sea level. The 14 to 16-mile round trip hike to Half Dome is not for visitors out of shape or unprepared.
Janssen Observatory
Janssen Observatory is located at the top of Le Mont Blanc, France. The stairs of the Janssen Observatory are something you will think twice before climbing. The steps are short.
They are not cramped. The stairs come with railings and do not get too crowded. What makes these stars squeamish is the placement at the summit of the tallest mountain in the Alps.
Statue of Liberty, New York:
Reaching the crown of the Statue of Liberty is perhaps the high-light of a visit to New York City. Do you know the inside of the statue of liberty, there are dangerous stairs that can literally take your breath away? There is no elevator service. Visitors have to climb up a double spiral staircase to reach the crown. The climb to the crown is strenuous. After exploring the museum at the pedestal and then visiting the crown, there is a climb that can be called one of the deadliest staircases in the world. Children 4 feet tall and accompanied by an adult are allowed to visit.
Pailon Del Diablo Waterfall, Ecuador:
The staircase next to these waterfalls were designed to blend in with the tropical landscape. It is known as “The Devil’s Cauldron “and the evil tricks the steep steps can play. These stairs are made from smooth over-size pebbles that provide better traction, and when you're looking down, they blend together, creating a beautiful optical illusion of a stone slide. They are also slippery from the constant mist and drizzle from the falls, and even though there's a good metal railing to save you from any spills, don't count on that.
Taihang Mountains Spiral Staircase:
China attracts tourists from all over the world. These stairs are not meant for people who suffer from vertigo. The 300 ft spiral staircase is installed on the wall of the stunning mountain in Linzhou and offers the most adventure-filled experience to mountaineers. The place follows age restrictions and strict guidelines.
Other Dangerous Staircases around the World:
While climbing the Angkor Wat Temple Stairs, Cambodia, one has to bow down on your hands and knees or pull yourself up with the provided ropes to scale the 70 percent inclined stairs of Angkor Wat’s temple. Guides claim that the steps were made so steep to remind people that heaven was hard to reach though you might make the same argument about Earth as you try not to tumble on the way down.
Sagrada Familia at Barcelona takes you through the dangerous staircase to reach the church. The staircase coils around the tightly closed walls. There is no railing that can help you during your walk. People are walking up and down simultaneously, making it all the riskier.
Watch your steps as you climb these stairs, whether spiraling up mountains, narrow passageways, or sky-scraping attractions.
