What to Do When You Fall Sick in a Foreign Land

Falling sick in a foreign land can be a real nightmare. We often neglect ourselves while on trip, saying that we will look into the matter after reaching home. But always remember A STITCH IN TIME SAVES NINE.

First thing to be done is get a travel insurance before leaving for a holiday especially who is a regular traveller. This will take care of your medical expenses incurred when you fall sick during your travel and tours.

Whenever you fall sick always remember don’t get stressed out. Be calm take a break and relax.

Try to book your holidays through some travel agent. They will be able to guide you if something goes wrong with your health. They will suggest you to go to a particular doctor since they have the information of all the helplines.

Don’t forget to leave your home without a first aid box. If you are suffering with any common problem associated with travelling you can just pop up the concerned pills from your first aid box.

When you fall sick try to avoid street food and only drink bisleri or any bottled water for the time being till you get back on your feet. Always see that you are hydrated .Make sure you drink lot of water and warm beverages.

Take preventive measures when one is having a cold. Wash your hand frequently, avoid touching youreyes. Have some vitamin C and vitamin D to give you more energy.

If you twist your ankle develop a heat rash. Don’t hesitate to use a local care. Remember doctors in that particular place are well versed with the local sickness and can treat you properly. The traveller can find local medical care through the state department website, but the state department is not responsible for any quality services provided by any doctor or hospital on the list.

In the most dire health situation like a heart attack or serious car accident, in this case it is best to contact the local embassy. The embassy makes an arrangement to get you airlifted out of the country and back home if required.

Once you finish visiting a foreign doctor and you are at home. Be sure you contact your hometown doctor and tell him the diagnosis given, what course of action or treatment has been given. Your family doctor may have an input or further instructions for you.

Tell the doctor everything about what you have eaten in the past 48 hrs. Some times the food doesn’t agree with some people. He will be able to diagnosis properly.

If you have a chronic medical condition and require the use of specific devices or medication make sure that you should have an access s to these treatments prior leaving your home. The travel insurance agents will be able to assist in securing these services prior to departure and also if you run out of medicines on your trip.

If planning to travel over a long distant for over a 12 hours period and not well in that case take a day or two off to recover instead of attempting a 12 hours bus trip.
