The Palisades, New Jersey

Palisades

The Palisades – Impressive Line of Steep Cliffs

The Palisades which is also known as the New Jersey Palisades or the Hudson River Palisades are considered to be a line of steep cliffs along the west area of the lower Hudson River towards the north-eastern New Jersey and southern New Jersey in United States.

The Palisades are the most impressive cliffs lining the western margin of the Hudson River. Palisade is resultant from the word `pale’, which eventually is from the Latin word `palus’ that means `stake’. The Lenape had named the cliffs `rocks that look like rows of trees’, a phrase which became `Weehawken’, a name of a town in New Jersey which is perched at the top of the cliffs across from Manhattan.

The cliffs tend to stretch north from the Jersey City at about 20 mi/32 km to around Nyack, New York. The cliffs rise almost vertically from the edge of the river which are almost 300 feet high at Weehawken and tend to increase steadily to 540 feet high near their northern terminus. Towards north from Fort Lee, the Palisades seem to be part of Palisades Interstate Park and are considered as a National Natural Landmark. Land slide was happened along Palisades cliff in 2012.

Designated – National Natural Landmark

The Palisades had been designated a `National Natural Landmark’ as a best example of a thick diabase sill in the United states. The sill seem to spread southward beyond the cliffs in Jersey City below the Inner Harbour and again appear on Staten Island.

The Palisades are the worn cross-section of a huge intrusive diabase sill which encroached between layers of sandstone and shale of the Late Triassic Stockton and Lockatong Formations. The sill lines 1,000 feet thick and could have probably been fed from an unknown stock buried below the basin towards the west.

Radiometric age determinations of the diabase indicate that the sill shaped in multiple stages, around 192 to 186 million years. The Palisades are some of the most histrionic geologic features in the surrounding area of New York City which forms a canyon of the Hudson north of George Washington Bridge. Besides this it also provides a vista of the skyline which is positioned in the Newark Basin, a rift basin located typically in New Jersey.

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory

There are several places of entrance to Palisades. A projection of diabase at the top of the cliff is one of the first you see while emerging onto the ramp from the Lincoln Tunnel on New Jersey end. The Palisades also tends to anchor the western area of both the George Washington as well as Tappan Zee Bridges.

The stretch of ten mile from the George Washington Bridge to the NJ-NY stateline tends to provide several locations for exploring the remarkable scenery within the Palisades Interstate Park. Moreover, a trail system which follows the crest of the Palisades starts at the western area of the George Washington Bridge with the possibility of walking across the bridge from the 175th Street or George Washington Bridge Station on the A train in Manhattan.

A better option would be to drive across the bridge going towards the north along the Palisades Interstate Parkway, pulling off at the various overlooks all along the way. The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory which is part of Columbia University is just north of the New Jersey/New York border at Exit 4 on the Palisades Interstate Parkway and this satellite campus provides open houses yearly, which are an attraction to those, interested in geology and would not want to miss.

National Cultural Heritage Site

According to legend, a beautiful Incan princess had been found bathing, by a young hunter and when she fled, the pool of water left behind by her became the lagoon. As she fled, the folds of her mantle streamed behind her developing the surrounding sand dunes.

The water level of the lagoon had dropped over the past few years, owing to landowners constructing wells to obtain groundwater together with evaporation during high summer temperatures. In an attempt to overcome this issue, the water was pumped into the lake from Ica for the inhabitants of Huacachina.

The National Institute of Culture had declared that area as a national cultural heritage site and it is expected that this tranquil oasis would never be a mirage in the desert. Residents of the Huacachina tend to rent out sand boards as well as buggies for backpackers who travel to this town. Tourist can experience the exciting sand dunes together with splendid views

Pisco, a strong version of brandy is known for over 250 years since the Spanish invaders had brought with them grapes to the New World. The tour offers an opportunity of visiting large, industrial winery which develops Pisco and wine utilising modern techniques as well as a small family run winery which uses ancient colonial age technique like clay jars which are known as botijas. One can get the opportunity of sampling some of the wine and Pisco at both these locations.

Bigar Spring – Amazing& Unique Waterfall

Bigar Spring commonly known as Bigar Waterfalls is a protected area under nature reserve IUCN category. It is located in the administrative territory of Bozovici in Caras-Severin County in South-western Romania and is the natural reserve in Anina Mountain, one of the most amazing and unique waterfall.

The water tends to fall from a cliff which is covered with moss and is said to be the most beautiful waterfall in the country. The underground spring is said to stream from the caves above and falls into Minis River. Bigar Waterfalls is one of the most popular waterfalls in the world which is found in Oravita, a city in Caras Severin County attracting various tourists to its exceptional site.

It seems like a massive mass of falling water dressing a huge rock that is covered by moss and the rocky base of the waterfall is covered by green vegetation. It has a wider base which gives it an appealing and original appearance and the most amazing sight of the waterfall is the water cascading over the green rock with beautiful clear glows which resembles an oversized diamond.

One can explore this 200 meters river which forms the waterfall and follow its course upwards from where it springs forth.

One of the Eight Unique Waterfalls of the World

Besides this there is also a small cave that can be discovered, a tall hole carved in the hard rock wherein to enter it, one could cross the city river bare foot and then climb a latter of rope and sticks. Bigar Waterfalls having an area of 175.60 ha, had been declared by the Law Number.5 of March 6, 2000 as a natural protected area.

According to the World Geography, there seems to be a number of facts which place this destination as number one on the list of eight unique waterfalls all over the world. This is owing to the way the water spreads and tends to fall in tiny shred of water as well as the fact that it is situated precisely on the 45th parallel north, towards the halfway point between the Equator and the North Pole.

The Bigar Natural Reserve comprises of a spasmodic natural spring, a stream, a cave and a waterfall which is all placed towards the Almajului Country towards the right side of Minisului Gorges.

Water of Spring – Rare Purity

The locals in Banat use the name of `izbuc’ for spring from which the water comes to light from beneath the rock and the water of the Bigar spring comes from under the rock which is more than 50 meters high. Some of the water of this spring is of a rare purity and is routed to Minis trout farm.

From here, but above and towards the peak of the cliff lies the hole of the cave with water where the water from Bigar creek tends to fall from time to time creating a line of small waterfalls so that the water is occasionally clear and foamy.

At a distance of around 200 meters from the sporadic spring, the water runs into Minis River from a volcanic tuff cone of seven meters high forming the Bigar Waterfall which has its own unique beauty. The rock cone of green moss together with water that falls on it looks like a dress of the mountain bride.

Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

Salar_de_Uyuni

Salar de Uyuni - World’s Largest Salt Flat

Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat is in Bolivia and is often visited as part of a 3 or 4 day tour of South West Bolivia. Salar de Uyuni covers a 10,000 km2 in Potosi region and the salt is more than 10 meters thick in the centre. During dry season, the salt plains tend to be totally flat expanse of dry salt. However, during the wet season, it is covered with a thin sheet of water which is traversable.

It was a part of a prehistoric salt lake, Lago Minchin that seemed to be covered on one occasion, most of southwest Bolivia and when it dried it left a couple of season puddles as well as many salt pans which included the Salar de Uyuni. The unrestrained beauty of this huge salt desert tends to make it one of the most breath-taking spectacles of South America.

This seems to be the most unforgettable Bolivian landscape, from the strange islands in a sea of strikingly bright salt to skilfully coloured mineral lakes in the Andean mountains. Fatal accidents could arise owing to unsafe vehicles and travellers need to take great precautions in choosing the tour operators to go along with them while visiting the salt flats.

Precautions Needed During Exploration

Visitors should ensure that their vehicles tend to have seatbelts, emergency radio transmitters as well as first aid equipment. They should also check on the guides’ level of experience and training to ensure safety during the exploration of this destination. Comprising of an estimated 10 billion tonnes of salt, a query often rose as to how Salar de Uyuni originated.

Fundamentally, the Altiplano or high plateau here did not seem to have drainage outlets meaning that the water from the surrounding mountains got collected forming a giant lake. High salinity would mean that while this huge prehistoric lake has evaporated long ago under the Andean sun, a thick crust of salt remains formed what is now recognised as the salt flats of Salar de Uyuni.

Aymaran Legend with Another Explanation

The legend of Aymaran provides another explanation which involves the mountains surrounding the salt flats, Kusina, Kusku and Tunupa and the story goes on to say that these mountains were once a giant people and Tunupa as well as Kusku were married. When Kusku had betrayed his wife for Kusina, Tunupa’s tears were said to have formed the salt flats.

The most popular and best way to experience Salar de Uyuni is to take a 4 x 4 tour to the salt flats with shared tours which normally accommodates up to 6 tourists. For a comfortable experience a private tour could be hired. These tours tend to take a minimum of one night stay in some basic accommodation and it is suggested to bring along plenty of warm clothes with warm sleeping bag for the night.

Sun cream could be advantageous since the reflection from the salt highlight the suns effect. In dry season, this destination is a dreamlike experience which should not be missed but the rain could take you to a totally new level. A thin sheet of water covers the flats and reflects a precise representation of the sky above which makes it impossible to note where the sky ends and the land starts.

Mendenhall Ice Caves, Juneau

Mendenhall_Ice_Caves
Mendenhall Glacier – 12 Mile Long Glacier

The Mendenhall Glacier a 12 mile long glacier is in Mendenhall Valley situated 12 miles from downtown Juneau in Southeast Alaska. It is a popular tourist attraction. However, few visitors tend to see the glacier form its most remarkable vantage point, inside it.

The glacier and the surrounding landscape are federally protected as part of the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area which is a unit of the Tongass National Forest. The glacier initially was known by two names, - Sitaantaagu – Glacier behind the Town and Aak’wtaaksit – Glacier behind the Little Lake, by the Tlingits.

The glacier was named Auke Glacier by John Muir, naturalist for the Tlingit Auk Kwan band in 1888. Towards 1891, it was again renamed in honour of Thomas Crowin Mendenhall. Its source tends to extend from the Juneau Icefield to Mendenhall Lake and finally the Mendenhall River.

The Ice Caves are said to be in the interior of the glacier and accessible only to those who prefer to kayak to and later climb over the glacier. The glacier however seems to be retreating fast due to global warming which heats the oceans with a rise in temperature.

Glacier – Ebbed by 2 Miles - 1958

Water seems to have carved caves in its interior creating surreal, turquoisetoned worlds where the shapes seems to be changing continuously Supervised by the Juneau Icefield Research Program since 1942, the Mendenhall Glacier has ebbed by two miles since 1958 while earlier in 1500; it had retreated only 0.5 miles.

The end of the glacier presently has a negative glacier mass balance and tends to continue to retreat in the probable future. The caves seem to be part of a function of these increased global melting. Trip to the Mendenhall ice caves is a difficult journey involving a long hike, an ice climb and faith that the melting caverns would not collapse, besides the kayak ride.

However, witnessing the incredible landscape is a one in a lifetime experience. Taking into consideration the average yearly temperature is presently increasing and the outlook for this trend continues, it would be possible that the glacier could experience a period of stabilization or small advance at the time of its retreating trudge.

Glacier to Be Visited with Professional Guide

This is owing to the increased amount of warm moist air being carried up to the top of the Icefield where cooler ambient temperatures tends to cause it to precipitate as snow.

The increased quantity of snow tends to feed the icefield probably adequate enough to balance the constantly increasing melting occurring at the terminus of the glacier. But this occurrence would turn away if the temperature endures to climb as the top of the glacier would no more have adequate cold ambient temperature to cause the snow to precipitate. Lately, the ice caves at the Mendenhall have received a lot of publicity since the glacier’s recession has enabled access to curious visitors, but there are no public trails to Mendenhall Glacier ice caves.

Being beautiful, the glaciers are constantly changing and could be dangerous to visitors. Glacier should be visited only along with professional guide though visiting the ice caves is strongly discouraged. The U.S. Forest Service has cautioned those intending to take up an expedition to the ice caves.

Thor’s Well -Hole in the ocean

Thor’s_Well

Thor’s Well – Gaping Sinkhole/Natural Wonder of the World

Thor’s Well located in Florence, Oregon near Cape Perpetua is a gaping sinkhole and a natural wonder of the world. Thor’s Well is part of Cape Perpetua, a characteristic Pacific Northwest headland, a forested space of land on the central Oregon Coast and is surrounded by water on three sides.

It is also knownas a spouting horn and is basically a huge salt water fountain operated by the power of the Pacific Ocean. During winter storms or at high tide, the waves tend to reach a height of about 20 feet high. However as beautiful as it may tend to be, it could be quite dangerous getting close to it due to sharp rocks which seems to be all over together with strong surge of water which could suck a person down into the abyss.

It has been estimated to be about 20 feet deep by its visitors. A photographer has informed  that he is of the belief that anyone who tends to ever fall in it would never ever survive. Placed on the edge of the Oregon coast is the gaping sinkhole which never tends to fill up inspite of the continuous stream of the sea water which seems to drain into it. However, Thor’s Well is not bottomless but is said to be very dangerous.

Drainpipe of the Pacific

Known also as the drainpipe of the Pacific, it is truly a hole in the rock which seems to appear to drain water from the ocean and in reality; the massive hole is probably around 20 feet deep.

Thor’s Well is said to be most outstanding, at high tide or during storms when the water tends to wash violently over the rocks, falling back through the hole. At the time of these sudden gushes unsuspecting tourists to the site could face dangers of being carried away right into the turbulence where survival seems bleak.

Inspite of the dangers, nature lovers and photographers tend to continue visiting this amazing site hoping to get the best glimpses of the aggressive waters which live up the namesake’s stormy personality. It was originally believed that Thor’s Well was a cave and its roof had collapsed in due to the constant water erosion.

Rocks Surround are Basalt

Thor’s Well withstands a cycle of water flowing in the hole ultimately overflowing and later exploding to heights of 6.1 metres where the surrounding water tends to get sucked quickly back into the hole. Rocks surrounding it are typically basalt and the water that fills and empties in the hole seems to be saltwater from the ocean.

Thor’s Well is extremely dangerous during high tide as the current of the flow of the water pulled into thehole could draw people along with it, owing to the slippery surface together with huge waves. There have been several images overstating the actual diameter of Thor’s Well which is in reality only about 3 meters.

Owing to its attractive nature, the site is popularly visited by several photographers as well as the tourists in general to access this site and hiking along the coast seems essential for glimpses of this amazing site with all its natural beauty.

3 Tips to Ensure your Moving Company is not a Scam

bye
Moving to a better place can be a huge event, regardless if you are moving to the other side of town or clear across the country. It can also get costly too. However, fixating on price alone can get you into a sticky situation and end up costing you a bundle. Take the example of Rusty Buchanan who moving to Los Angeles ended up paying out almost $90,000 in legal fees in order to recover his belongings from a scam mover who wouldn't give up his belongings for 18 months.

He claimed the mover took off with his belongings and ended up never even working for the moving company that he was under the impression he was doing business with. The mover was a subcontractor. The BBB, each year, gets thousands of complaints against con movers. You can avoid being ripped off by doing some research and following some simple tips.

Do an Initial Background Screening

Once you gather up a list of potential movers, go on the Internet and do a little check on their background. Check the Better Business Bureau and the site movingscam.com which is a consumer advocacy site. These sites will provide you with a blacklist of companies that have numerous consumer complaints. Rip-off Report is another such site you can look into.

Show the Estimator Everything

Make sure you show the estimator who comes to your house everything you intend on having moved. This includes everything in the attic, closets, basement and backyard. When it comes to moving day and the mover feels you have far more items to move than was originally calculated, he might try to challenge you into a higher fee. Obviously, you don't have to pay the higher fee, but he doesn't have to move your belongings either for the original amount. Your options will most likely be limited at this point.

Look for Red Flags

During the estimate, look for red flags. For instance, most moving companies such as byebyemovingottawa.com that are reputable wouldn't ask you for a cash deposit prior to moving your stuff. If they seem too eager to grab your money upfront, chances are they might not be legitimate. You will also want to check out how professional the movers seem during the estimate process. Can they answer all your questions? Do they show up late? Do they provide their own equipment? Do you feel you can trust them?

Just a little research and checking things about before hiring the moving company can be the difference between a smooth move and a chaotic one.

Towards the beginning of November 1969, it is said that the Alcatraz island had been occupied for over 19 months by a group of aboriginal inhabitants from San Francisco who seemed to be part of a movement of Native activism all over the nation with public protests during the 1970s.

Towards 1972, Alcatraz was the national recreation area, receiving the designation in 1986 as a National Historic Landmark. Presently, the amenities of the island are managed by the National Park Service, as part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area and are open to tours.

Tourist can reach the Alcatraz island through ferry ride from Pier 33 which is near fisherman’s Wharf, San Francisco. Hornblower Cruises and Events which tend to operate under the Alcatraz Cruises are considered to be the official ferry provider to and from the island.

Home to Abandoned Prison/Site of the Oldest Operating Lighthouse

Alcatraz island is home to the abandoned prison and the site of the oldest operating lighthouse on the West Coast of the United States, an early military fortification as well as natural features like rock pools and seabird colony. The federal prison on the island in the chilly waters of California’s San Francisco Bay had some of America’s most dangerous and difficult criminal during the years of operation from 1934 to 1963.

Those who served during the maximum security facility were the notorious gangster Al Scarface Capone and murderer Robert Birdman of Alcatraz Stroud.None of the inmate was ever successful in escaping `The Rock’ the so-called prison though several known attempts were made over the years.

When the prisons were shut down, owing to high operating costs, the Alcatraz island was occupied for two years by Native American activists and presently historic Alcatraz Island besides being the site of U.S. military prison from late 1950 to 1933, is also a popular tourist destination. In 1847, seventy-two years later, the U.S. Army noticed `The Rock’ and its value as a military fortification.

Discovery of Gold – American River, California

The typographical engineers started conducting geological surveys and towards 1853, U.S. Army engineers began constructing military fortress on the island together with the Pacific Coast’s first operating lighthouse. Towards 1848, the discovery of gold along the American River in California, attracted many miners from across the world to the West Coast in search of the valuable metal.

As the news regarding the abundant wealth in California spread all over the world, the United States Government summoned for security measures in order to protect the land as well as the mineral resources from being seized by the other countries. According to the documentary of 1971 on the History of Alcatraz the island is said to measure 1,675 feet by 590 feet and is 135 feet, the highest point at the time of mean tide.

Lake_Hillier

Lake Hiller – A Saline Lake

Lake Hillier, a saline lake is located on the edge of Middle Island. It is the biggest of the islands and islets which make up the Recherche Archipelago in the Goldfields Esperance area, off the south coast of Western Australia. It is specially known for its pink colour.

A long and thin shore tends to divide the Southern Ocean from the lake. The Lake Hillier is said to be 600 metres in length by around 250 meters wide. It is surrounded by a rim of sand together with dense woodland of paper-bark and eucalyptus trees together with a narrow strip of sand dunes which are covered by vegetation extricating its northern edge from the northern coast of Middle Island.

The most appealing feature of the lake is its pink colour and the vibrant colour is said to be permanent. It does not seem to alter when the water is taken in a container. The best mode of transport to view the lake is by air. From space, the lake appears a solid bubble gum pink. Lake Hillier’s colour is appreciated best when seen from the air where it contrasts intensely with the lush forest surrounding it.

Pink Water Not Toxic

Travellers sometimes get dropped off on Middle Island by helicopters tours or cruise ships. The lake water looks more transparent though still very pink and even in a glass or a bucket; the pink hue of the water still tends to remain. The pink water is not toxic and due to its salinity one would bob like a cork.

No one is really sure why the lake appears to be pink and scientists are of the belief that the colour comes from a dye created by bacteria that lives in the salt crusts, while others are of the belief the source of the pink colour could be due to the presence of the organism Dunaliella salina.

The Middle Island’s pink lake dates back to 1802 journals of explorer Matthew Flinders who had climbed Middle Island’s highest peak in order to survey the surrounding waters when he had discovered the amazing lake. Middle Island and its pink lake are situated in the pristine wilderness and the only way to take a look of this lake is from the air. One could explore the islands and the wide life of the Recherche Archipelago from Esperance, on a cruise.

Important Bird Area - IBA

In good weather condition, the lake tends to turn a soft shade of pink due to the high concentration of algae in the water. The lake has been recognised by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area – IBA since it tends to support important number of native as well as migratory birds.

The Esperance Museum has on display material regarding the local history, which includes pioneer memorabilia, shipwreck items together with pieces of the US Sky Lab which had fallen on the earth in Esperance region in 1980, Aboriginal artefacts as well as antiques.

There is an artificial reef immediately off the end of the town jetty which seems to be a good spot for strolling or for fishing. Several countries around the world have pink lakes some of which are Australia, Azerbaijan, Canada, Senegal and Spain. The lakes are said to be protected national parks and are a sanctuary for migratory birds, divers, flora and fauna.

Hashima Island

Hashima_Island

Origin of the Name Hashima Island

Hashima Island is nicknamed “Gunkanjima” or “Battleship” island because of the shape of the island and unique silhouette. It is situated around 15 kilometers (approx. 9 miles) from the city of Nagasaki, in southern Japan. The island's most prominent characteristics are the derelict historical concrete buildings, untouched except by nature, and the surrounding sea wall. The sea-walls earlier protected the local residents from Typhoons coming in from the sea.

History of Hashima Island

The Hashima island was well known for its undersea coal mines set up in 1887 i.e. during Japan’s industrialization and was home to a huge coal mining operation run by Mitsubishi, with 5,259 people living there resulting in an astounding 83,500 people per square kilometre, making it one of the most thickly populated places in history. Until the end of the Second World War; Chinese prisoners of war and Korean civilians worked under Mitsubishi as slave labourers with strict supervision of work and very harsh conditions. The treatment meted out to the workers was very brutal. During the World War II era, the island was purportedly called the "Jail Island" or "Hell Island" among Korean forced laborers.

When coal was replaced by petroleum in the 1960s, the mines on the Hashima island closed down and the island is now unpopulated with empty buildings. Mitsubishi officially declared the closure of the mines in 1974. Mitsubishi owned the Hashima island till 2002. The island has been included as part of Nagasaki city since the merger with the former town of Takashima in 2005.

Recent recognition of Hashima Island

Since the Hashima island has been gaining attention internationally for its modern regional heritage, and also for the intact housing complex remnants showcasing the period from the Taishō period to the Shōwa period, some of the walls in the exterior of the island have been refurbished with concrete. It has become the recurrent theme of debate among enthusiasts for ruins.

During the prosperity years of Japan around 1960; the island had 50 apartment buildings which housed a population of more than 5000, but that was 30 years ago. Now it is completely deserted. The complex of the mine was closed in 1974. The desolate place was open to tourists about 4 years ago with limited access. The island was opened for public visits as of April 22, 2009.

Japan’s request in 2009 to include Hashima Island as a UNESCO World Heritage Site was strongly opposed by South Korean authorities on the premise that Korean and Chinese forced labors were used in the mines on the island prior to and during World War II. North Korea also disapproved of the World Heritage bid citing the same reason.

However, in July 2015 South Korea withdrew its opposition after Japan's acknowledged this concern as part of the island’s history, particularly taking into account that there were huge hoards of Koreans who were brought against their will and made to work under cruel circumstances in the 1940s and that Japan was ready to include suitable procedures into the interpretive strategy to remember the victims such as the establishment of information center. Hashima Island was included on the UNESCO Heritage list as of July 5, 2015.

Popular showcases of Hashima Island

The Hashima island was broadcast in History Channel's ‘Life After People’ in 2009, first season episode "The Bodies Left Behind" as an example of the decay of concrete buildings. The island also featured in 2011 in an episode of a 3D production, ‘Forgotten Planet’ emphasizing the island's present condition, history and unlawful photos shot by urban tourists. In 2012 James Bond movie Skyfall, the island served as an inspiration for the lair of villain Raoul Silva. A Japanese rock band also shot their music video there.
