Vulcano Island

Vulcano Island
Let us start with a fun fact- the name Roman gave to this island has today contributed to the word volcano in European dialects which all of you know is a mountainous figure erupting discharges from the heart of the earth. The main occupation on this island has always been harvesting of minerals wood and other such natural stuff.

In fact these activities were the main economic activities until the 19th century. After that for a short while during the Bourbon family ownership of the island making wine was the main economic activities and orchards of grapes were cultivated in the vicinity. It was during that time only that the volcano erupted and everything was destroyed existing on the island in the name of economic activity.

It was the time when the family sold this island to the local populace. But still till the time today the villa made by them is intact. Right now close to 500 people live on the island. Now the main occupation obviously is tourism. These people trade in goods of the interest of the tourists and arrange travel facilities.

As for the physical location it is only a few minutes away from the main attraction of the Aeolian island that is Lipari Island. This island is famous for its sulphur mud baths, hot springs and marvelous beaches.

Let us talk about the island a little more. The island is the result of plate tectonic activities between African plate and Eurasian plate moving towards each other. There are three volcanic canters in the island. Among them first is the old Stratovolcano cone which has three peaks of the heights 500 meter, 480 meter and 190 meters. This volcanic cone has collapsed into the caldera. Second is Gran Cratere which is most active of all and it has had at least six major eruption in the last six thousand years. And the last one of the three is Vulcanello which is 125 meters high and is flooded in rainy season.

The last major volcanic activity on the island was during 1890s and the discharge fell between the Vulcano Island and Lipari. Romans believed that Vulcano was the chimney of god’s workshop and it was believed that weapons are being forged here for the battles between the gods. This island thus somehow or other have helped in development of various mythological fictions and stories.

Today the main activities happening here are tourism related. But it is not bad either to go on strolling around the island and find an interested guide or person to tell you all those stories. Restaurants which cater delicious sea food are also home to loquacious people going over and over again about these mythological stories and figures.

To sum up it is a very nice travel destination and offers everything you need when travelling around. It has nice beaches, nice food, and nice sea surfing facilities along with a mythological flavor. Isn’t it enough for you to decide to go visit this island the first time you can spare yourself a moment.
