Cambodia is located directly on the Gulf of Thailand between the countries Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. The mighty Mekong River, which is one of the ten longest rivers in the world, crosses the country in the east. Further Tonle Sap is the largest inland freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. The country's capital, Phnom Penh is subjected to a rapid increase in population, which is due to an increasing rural exodus. Cambodia is dominated by a tropical monsoonal climate. The rainy season is between May and October and brings sometimes very large amount of running water.
